- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The USAF C-17 Globemaster III, with the tail number 10186 stationed at Dover Air Force Base (AFB), Delaware, boasts a remarkable history of service. The C-17 is renowned for its versatility and ability to carry out a wide range of missions, from humanitarian aid to combat support. This particular aircraft has been no exception, actively participating in several significant conflicts and peacetime operations.
- The original lineage of the C-17 dates back to the early 1970's when the United States Air Force needed a single aircraft that would combine the capacity of the C-141 Starlifter and the C-5 Galaxy aircraft, yet have the versatility of the C-130 Hercules. Because of the lessons learned in the Vietnam War, the USAF turned to Boeing and McDonnell-Douglas to come up with a design to fit the requirement. Although both manufacturers came up with completed, flyable prototypes, neither was chosen. With the war's end, both companies went back to the drawing boards to come up with a more modern design, and McDonnell-Douglas came out the winner. In August 1981, the C-17 was given the official "go-ahead" from the USAF. First flying in September 1991, the C-17 is one of the USAF's most important aircraft. Filled with modern day technology, no other military transport aircraft matches its capacity. Some of these features include a full "glass" cockpit that has a "heads up display" (HUD). Performance is remarkable with the ability to take off and land using only 1,400 feet of runway. With the C-17's in-flight refueling capability, the aircraft has global range, and more than three times the capacity of the C-130, making it the new backbone of the USAF's transport fleet. Despite Boeing's loss to McDonnell-Douglas for the contract to build this new transport, an ironic turn of events happened in the late 1990s that led to Boeing's purchase of McDonnell-Douglas, thus securing the honorable rights to the C-17. As the popularity and versatility of the C-17 has been recognized, many of the world's air forces have added this aircraft to their fleets.
- One of the most notable conflicts in which 01-0186 played a crucial role was the Global War on Terror. It was instrumental in the rapid deployment and sustainment of American forces in the early 2000s, particularly during the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. This C-17 was part of the massive airlift operations that ensured troops, equipment, and supplies reached the theater of operations swiftly, making it an invaluable asset during these critical periods.
- Another significant aspect of the C-17's service at Dover AFB is its involvement in humanitarian missions. From delivering relief supplies to disaster-stricken areas to evacuating civilians from conflict zones, the C-17 has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to serving not just the nation but the global community as well.
- On August 15, 2021, this Dover Air Force Base's Boeing C-17 Globemaster III performed a phenomenal feat. Operating as call sign "Reach 871," the aircraft departed Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport with a record 823 passengers aboard during a humanitarian evacuation bound for the Al Udeid Airbae in Qatar. This heroic flight comprised 640 adults and 183 Afghani children and is the largest airlift of passengers ever to be carried on a single aircraft. This flight would not have been possible if it were not for the valiant efforts of the logistics and skills of the 3rd Airlift Squadron from Dover AFB.
- Whether you're an aviation enthusiast or a collector of military aircraft models, this meticulously crafted 1:400 scale model is an excellent way to commemorate the aircraft's significant contributions during times of conflict and peace. Relive the missions and legacy of this C-17 by adding this model to your collection.
